Wedding Photographers: Does Your Favorite Prime Lens Exist On Sony?

Wedding Photographers: Does Your Favorite Prime Lens Exist On Sony?

I wouldn’t blame you – hundreds of photographers (if not thousands) have done so (myself included). Perhaps you’re dissatisfied with what your current Nikon or Canon offer. Perhaps, like me, you’re frustrated that your DSLR does not have the ease of eye AF. Or perhaps, you’re just twitching to switch camps because nothing excites you more than fueling your G.A.S. But before you do, I built this FREE tool, especially for wedding photographers, to help find replacement Sony FE prime lenses because let’s face it, the way Sony names its lens line up isn’t the most logical.

Why isn’t face detection AF working on my Sony a7Riii / a7iii when filming 4K video?

Why isn’t face detection AF working on my Sony a7Riii / a7iii when filming 4K video?

Your Sony a7Riii / a7iii can eye-AF with all native EF-mount lenses in stills mode. Did you know that your a7Riii / a7iii can face detect-AF in movie mode? Even whilst recording in 4K (3840×2160) XAVC S? Yes, yes it can and it works very well with all native EF-mount lenses. Most of you will know that the face detect-AF feature will not work when filming in 100fps (PAL) or 120fps (NTSC) – most reviews covered that already. But if you are struggling to get face detect-AF to work when recording video in 24P, 25P or 30P when filming in 4K XAVC S, then this article is for you (hint: turn off Proxy Recording).

Which Sony Alpha series mirrorless cameras offer 4K video recording?

You probably know why you want to record in 4K resolution (3840×2160 pixels) – personally, I want to be able to down-sample my footage so that it is ‘sharper’. My Sony a7iii shipped default with 4K video recording in 24, 25, 30 fps but if you want to save a bit of coin and buy an older Sony Alpha mirrorless camera model, in this article, I have detailed which camera models you should look into (e.g., does a7S offer internal 4K?). Best landscape photography lenses for Sony a6500 a6300 a6000

When doing research for this blog post, I realized that most articles focused on full frame users. My interpretation based on existing blog posts were that most authors saw APS-C cameras and corresponding crop lenses as being cheap. Perhaps I was seeing what I was wanting to see. But I felt an urge to create an article that would benefit those of you who have a crop sensor camera, even if it were just a simple list of the best Sony lenses for those of you who want to venture out into the wilderness to capture stunning landscapes.

7 best all purpose Sony lenses for your Sony Alpha camera

Many years ago (and I mean many many years ago) I owned a Sony NEX. That was the extent of my knowledge of the Sony E-mount. So when I got my hands on the Sony a7iii, I had much to learn. Unfortunately for me, I didn’t do the due diligence and I ended buying an APS-C lens (Sony Sonnar T* E 24mm f/1.8 ZA) for my full frame Sony a7iii.

Most. Expensive. Crop lens. Ever.

Can I use E-mount lenses on Sony a7?

I thought I had the dream fast wide lens. Carl Zeiss optics at an attractive price (compared to the ZEISS Batis 25mm). Imagine the churning in the pit of my stomach when I realized I had bought the most expensive APS-C lens in my life. Don’t make my $898 mistake when I bought myself a Sony Sonnar T* 24mm f/1.8 ZA for my Sony a7 III .. In my opinion, Sony has the worst and confusing lens naming system of all camera lens manufacturers. As a relatively new Sony a7 III owner myself having pre-ordered two a7 III bodies upon announcement, I did some research on whether or not I can use Sony E-mount lenses on my Sony a7 III. This is what I found.

Will Sony FE Sigma Art lenses perform better than EF-mount Sigma Art lenses with MC-11

I remember my first Sigma lens – it wasn’t very accurate and it tended to focus hunt a lot and exhibit front/rear-focus. But when the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 (non-Art) did nail focus, it produced a far better result than the Canon and Nikon 50mm f/1.4 counterparts. In fact, because I switched camps from Canon to Nikon, back to Canon and once again to Nikon (URGH!), I owned this Sigma 50mm f/1.4 on both Canon EF and Nikon F-mount variants. Like the Canon 50L, the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 had good copies and atrocious copies.
